NORTH EAST INDIA COUNCIL FOR SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH (NEICSSR)

The North East India Council for Social Science Research (NEICSSR), headquartered at Shillong, in the state of Meghalaya, India, is a prime research organization. It was established in 1974 under the Indian Societies Registration Act, 1860 (Act No. XXI of 1860) and has been actively engaging itself in promoting the academic cause of research by organizing conferences, seminars, symposia, workshops, panel discussions etc. for the past 49 years since its inception. This Council is one of the oldest research organizations in the North Eastern Region of India. More than 80 books with ISBN have been published by the Council till date. The Council has moreover to its credit a biannual Journal – The Journal of North-East India Council for Social Science Research (ISSN 0970 – 7913), which is regularly being published for the last 49 years. Being a member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the North East India Council for Social Science Research (NEICSSR) has been continuously commemorating World Environment Day by various academic pursuits to bring up issues regarding preservation and conservation of the environment and sustainable practices to combat climate change. 

NEICSSR has as many as 655 Life Members and 7 Institutional Members all across the world.

Notable Activities of NEICSSR in the Past Five Years

INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR

 

An International Seminar on the theme “Community and Cultural Multiplicity in North East India and South Asia: Ethnography, History and Society” was successfully organized on 20th, 21st and 22nd May, 2019. It was organised by NEICSSR in collaboration with Shillong Law College, Shillong. Dr. Bibhash Dhar was the convenor of the seminar and Prof. Biman Dutta, Member of North Eastern Council, Shillong, had inaugurated the seminar at the venue of Shillong Law College, Dhankheti, Shillong. Various delegates from India and South Asian countries participated in the seminar.




NATIONAL SEMINARS

NEICSSR has organised two National Seminars at Shillong on different issues of the North East India.

The Council had successfully organised a National Seminar on the theme “25 Years of Economic Reforms in India & its Impact on North East India” on 9th and 10th December 2016 at Raitong Building Conference Hall of the Directorate of Urban Affairs, Govt. of Meghalaya. The Convenor of the Seminar was Dr. Amrit Pal Singh. The Honourable Governor of Meghalaya was the Chief Guest of the seminar and inaugurated the same. Delegates from different academic fields and planners from various Government offices participated in the seminar. The proceedings of the seminar papers have been published in the form a book bearing ISBN. The publisher of the book was Eastern Book House, Guwahati, India.




The other National Seminar which had been successfully organized by the Council was on the theme “Growth of Unplanned Towns and Cities in the North East Region of India: Problems and Alleviation Measures” on 20th and 21st November 2017. It was held at Shillong Law College, Shillong. The Convenor of the seminar was Dr. P. S. Nianglang. The Honourable Minister of Urban Affairs, Govt. of Meghalaya, Mrs. Amparin Lyngdoh had inaugurated the seminar at Shillong Law College, Shillong. 
Both the above mentioned National Seminars were grand successes in terms of number of paper presentations, number of learned participants and the discussion generated in the Seminars.
